What is Heat of Combustion?

The heat of combustion is the amount of energy released when a particular fuel undergoes combustion. This heat of combustion goes by several names like higher heating value, higher calorific value, and upper heating value.

Here is the formula used for combustion is,

HC = LHV + Hv * ( NH20 / NFuel)

where,

HC is the heat of combustion

LHV is the lower heating value

Hv is the heat of vaporization

NH20 is the No.of moles of water vaporized

NFuel is the No.of moles of fuel combusted

How do you Calculate the Heat of Combustion?

Take a look at the steps that are given below to calculate the heat of combustion easily.

  • Enter the values that were given in the problem.
  • Determine the values of heat of combustion and lower heating value, the heat of vaporization.
  • Then apply the formula, i.e., HC = LHV + Hv * ( NH20 / NFuel)
  • Finally, get the answer to the heat of combustion.

Example:

Question: Calculate the heat of combustion of methane given its lower heating value is 40 MJ/kg and it releases 10 moles of water vapor when 4 moles of fuel are combusted.

Solution:

Given values, LHV = 40 MJ/kg 

NH20 = 10moles, NFuel = 4 moles.

As we know, heat of vaporization for water as 2.257 MJ/kg.

Apply the formula,

HC = LHV + Hv * ( NH20 / NFuel)

HC = 40 + 2.257 * ( 10 / 4)

= 45.64 Mj/Kg

Therefore the heat of combustion is 45.64 Mj/Kg.
