What is Daltons Law?

In Chemistry, The pressure of the gas mixture is equal to the sum of the pressure of partial gases in a container is called daltons partial pressures law.

Partial Pressure of a gas:

When the gases are present in the container, the unsafe movement of their molecules exerts pressure on the walls of the container. If we have mixture of gases in a container then the pressure applied by individual gas is partial pressure of gas. Units of a pressure is kilopascal.

Formula of Daltons Law:

Ptotal = P1 + P2 + … + Pn

Pressure of individual gas can be calculated by the formula,

P = n*R*T/v

Where,

v is the volume.

R = 8.314 Jk-1mol-1, ideal gas constant.

T is the temperature.

n is the no.of moles.

How to Calculate the Partial Pressure of the Gas?

To calculate the partial pressure of the gas you need to go through the guidelines that are given below. Take a quick tour carefully.

  • Note down the values that was given in the problem.
  • Apply the formula of ideal gas.
  • Substitute the values in it and simplify it.
  • Finally get the result.

Example:

Question: Calculate the pressure of the gas if a gas container has 4L of helium gas. The temperature of container is 180K. And there are 4 moles of helium present in the container.

Solution:

Given values are:

Temperature(t) = 180k

Volume (v) = 4L

No. of Moles(n)= 4 moles

Now, apply the pressure of the gas formula.

P = [n*R*T]/v

= [4*8.314* 180] / 4, As we know that R = 8.314 Jk-1mol-1

=1496.52 Kpa(Kilopascal)

Hence the pressure of the gas is 1496.52 Kpa.
